Bakunawa Fest X announces Juried Award Winners!
Canada's Demon Box by Sean Wainsteim wins the Grand Bakunawa for Best Short Film while The Script by Aleksandra Kardalevska from Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia gets the Grand Jury Prize. Singapore's Kathleen Bu wins Best Director for You Will See while The Old Young Crow by Liam LoPinto (Japan, USA) and El Padrasto (The Skin) by José Casas (Spain) gets Special Mention. Premyo Pinoy Fantastica (Best Filipino Film of the Fest) goes to Sa Burutlakan (Where the Sun Rises) by Kyle Fredrick Jabian and Aaron Dave Escobido.

Bakunawa Fest X Opening Films Announced
Bakunawa Fest X opens with the full-legth film 'Rock-a-bye Baby' (Black & White version) by Vietnamese filmmaker Lê Bình Giang. The black and white version of the film makes its World Premiere at Bakunawa Fest X! Traditionally, Bakunawa Fest opens with three short films which this year go to: 'The Old Young Crow' by Liam LoPinto (Japan / USA), 'The 25th Filial Exemplar' by Leon Cheo (Singapore) and 'You Will See' by Kathleen Bu (Singapore). Rock-a-bye Baby's colored version had its premiere at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), described by Asian Movie Pulse as "gritty slasher with elements of avant-garde". Meanwhile, 'The Old Young Crow', which won numerous awards including Best Film at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and at the Los Angeles Asia Pacific Film Festival, makes its Philippine Premiere. The 25th Filial Exemplar which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival is by Leon Cheo whose film Two is Enough was selected in last year's Bakunawa Fest. 'You WIll See' by young filmmaker Kathleen Bu also premiered at BIFAN and makes a record as the first international female filmmaker whose film is selected to open Bakunawa Fest. Both films will be having their Philippine Premieres.

Bakunawa Fest X Closing Films Announced
Bakunawa Fest X proudly closes with the Indonesian documentary 'Roda Roda Nada' (The Tone Wheels) by Yuda Kurniawan, a compelling story that follows a group of passionate, determined artists who performs and celebrates Dangdut music on the streets of Jakarta. This is a charming documentary that effortlessly brings you into the action. There's much to like in this documentary and will surely lure you to invest on their story. The artists here are rock stars in their own universe - the long noisy streets of real everyday people! It's a gem of a film (discovered first at Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival 2022) and Roda Roda Nada proves that not all edgy films need to be odd, weird or shocking!
And we end this year's edition with two shorts: the quiet yet genre-bending 'Promessa de um Amor Salvagem" (Promise of a Wild Love) by awardwinning Brazilian filmmaker Davi Mello (who-directed 'All the Faces I Love Look Alike' from Bakunawa Fest 9) and the Filipino folkloric horror 'Sa Burutlakan' (Where the Sun Rises) by young Ilonggo filmmakers Kyle Fredrick Jabian and Aaron Dave Escobido which makes its World Premiere at Bakunawa Fest X.
Together with our Opening Films, our Closing Films speak much of the diversity and direction of Bakunawa Fest X - to be brave amidst the changing human landscapes; to be free despite the oppresive nature of the times; and to remain locally fantastic in the face of commercial pressures.

Nelz Yumul is Selected Artist of Bakunawa Fest X
Illustrator / Graphic Designer / Creative Director Nelz Yumul is the Selected Artist of Bakunawa Fest X, the Philippines' first and longest-running fantastic film festival. Nelz is a self-taught artist who started his creative journey during the early 2000s. He effortlessly traverses diverse mediums, leaving his indelible mark on comics, illustration, collage art, mural art, designer toy art and the world of NFT art. He is the branchild of WeeWillDoodle collective. Check out his universe on Instagram under the handle @nelzy.
As selected artist, his art will be used in all of Bakunawa Fest X's collaterals. For one decade now, Bakunawa Fest has been praised by filmmakers and artists to have groundbreaking curatorial programs, striking collaterals and the DIY Bakunawa trophies.

Bakunawa Fest 9 Closing & Winning Films at UPFI Film Center on April 26, 2023 at 5PM! FREE Admission!
Bakunawa Fest's 9th edition comes to a close at the UPFI Film Center in Diliman, Quezon City as the first fantastic festival in the country screens its Closing Film 'Pao's Forrest' from Vietnam and will have an informal awarding ceremony and screening of all the winning films as decided by the appointed Board of Jury for the ninth edition. Screening starts at 5PM and will be free of charge! See you all this Wednesday!
Bakunawa Fest announces Award Winners for its 9th edition ahead of awards show & closing film screening at UPFI Film Center on April 26!
The Philippines' 'the night is drunk when we suffer' by RS Magtaan (Grand Bakunawa for Best Short Film) and Taiwan's 'Part Forever' by Chung An Ou Alan (Jury Prize) lead the winners for the 9th edition as judged by a Board of Jury composed of Film Critic (Manunuri) Tito Genova Valiente, filmmaker & actor Kyle Fermindoza and filmmaker & graphic artist Myish Endonila. 'Part Forever' has the most awards, winning Jury Prize, Best Director and Best Performance for actress Ming Yang. Veteran French actor Laurent Le Doyen of the film 'Laura' (by Yannis Bennegent) won the other Best Performance Award. This edition's Jury gave out 9 additional awards apart from the required Best Short Film & Jury Prize.

Bakunawa Fest 9 closes its season and kicks off 10th edition on April 26 at UPFI Film Center
After its record-breaking hybrid ninth edition & season (2022-2023) with online screenings, in-person exclusive screenings, multi-media exhibitions, fringe events and Philippine Primetime cable TV premiere, Bakunawa Fest 9 will have its closing ceremonies and screening of winners and closing film at the UPFI Film Center on April 26, 2023 (5 PM). It will also kick off BAKUNAWA FEST X which runs from October 16 to 22, 2023 to be hosted by UPFI Film Center. The news have been announced jointly by Director Elvert Bañares of Bakunawa Fest and Prof. Nonoy Lauzon and Ms. Sinag De Leon of UPFI Film Center.
